Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund Comes to a Close

Act Now

The Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF), a program run by Illinois' housing authority and financed through the federal American Rescue Plan Act, officially closed on October 31, 2023. The roughly $300 milliion fund helped more than 15,000 Illinois homeowners, who received financial assistance to stay in their homes. This marks the end of a major Covid-19 aid directed at homeowners, which likely helped to prevent widespread foreclosures during the pandemic.

“One of the reasons why we didn’t have a foreclosure crisis from Covid … is because the state and federal government, upfront, took much more aggressive actions to protect homeowners,” said Kristin Faust, the executive director of the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

Although ILHAF may be closed, there are still other measures that homeowners can take to save their home from foreclosure.
